Dr Lai is the Global Medical Director for Medical Information and Analysis, International SOS. She is a physician with 20 years’ experience in medical assistance, health and risk communication. She is responsible for medical information provided to clients through the International SOS websites and alerts. She provides guidance to the organisation and its clients globally, on topics ranging from infectious and pandemic diseases, travel health, public health, disaster preparedness and response, and medical risk.

She trained primarily in internal medicine and clinical research, working in Sydney, Chicago and New York. She has experienced different roles within the group in Singapore, Jakarta and Sydney.


Irene has been providing global health security, pandemic preparedness and response expertise for International SOS and clients since 2005.  She developed the first International SOS Pandemic Preparedness Website, Reference Guide and Protocols, and continues to oversee the dedicated COVID-19 website. She has worked with dozens of clients developing specific plans and training – industries include financial, mining, hospitality and transport.

She has co-authored a number of publications on pandemic preparedness, medical intelligence, the Ebola experience and global health security (in publication).
